Project Clutha

Town Hall Redevelopment Project

Project Clutha is a group of 20-36 year old Clutha residents, who aim to make a positive difference within our community. This group evolved from the Youth forum held in September 2006. One of the goals set at the forum was to create a vision to improve the appearance of Balclutha (in particular the main street) and help create a more positive attitude for those who live and visit here.

The group’s vision is currently in stage one of a four stage proposal to redevelop the existing annual flower beds, this includes five gardens located around the Balclutha War memorial Hall.

Spokesperson Nicola Copeland said “the computer generated images of our plans clearly show what can be achieved. Once established, the proposed planting plans will increase the aesthetics of the town. We plan to use a combination of native and exotic trees, shrubs and perennials. Along with large feature rocks, sourced from local properties to create reasonably low maintenance gardens for year round colour and texture.”

Currently the group is working through the consultation process with Clutha District Council, having received the support and approval from the District Development Board, Balclutha Beatification and Enviros Society, Big River Promotions and a number of other local community organisations.

Funding for this proposal will potentially be sourced from a combination of community grants, The Clutha District Councils’ current budget allocated to the half-yearly replacement of annual beds, along with perspective donations of materials, machinery and labour.

The addition of a sculptural ‘hand’ made out of weathered metal – for durability and visual appeal and flag poles with Clutha Country banners should make a clear and welcoming entrance to the Balclutha Visitors Centre and reiterate the Clutha Country Branding in the town.

The proposal has been developed with four stages, and it is hoped that the developments can occur in sequence with the annual removal of flowerbeds half yearly in November and April. Once approval has been gained by Clutha District Council it is hoped the first gardens will be redeveloped by Christmas.

Members of the public wishing to view and comment on the plans will be able to view these at the Balclutha Information Centre, The South Otago A&P Show or right here on the Project Clutha website >>> View ALL plans & images
